Senator Joe Miller

Endorsement Speech

by Joe Miller on 02/17/12

Good evening and thank you all for coming tonight.

The last four years of my life have been a real interesting time. I have learned so much serving in the North Dakota Senate.  It’s a pleasure to serve in a Citizens legislature.  I hope to continue serving you in the capacity of your Senator.

For those who do not know me, hi I’m Joe Miller and I’m running for District 10 Senator.  I grew up and continue to farm near Fordville with my family.  I live in Park River.  I graduated from Park River High School and have bachelors’ degree from Valley City State.

For the past 4 years I have been serving on the Finance and Taxation Committee and the Agriculture Committee during the session.  It’s amazing how much tax policy affects our lives.  I have always had and interest in this subject and now I am glad to have been a part of building better policy.  We have provided permanent income tax relief, reduction in property taxes, and many other steps have been taken to reduce burdens for the people of North Dakota.

But there is so much more work to do.

North Dakota is in financially superb position.  We have large surpluses that have allowed us to cut taxes, and fund various projects and priorities.  There are parts of our state that are bursting at the seams with development, but there are parts that still struggle.

Agriculture and energy has filled our state coffers with revenue.  Many have suggestions as to what we should do with that money.  It’s my belief that we should use this blessing to transform our state into an economic powerhouse, and we should start be reforming our tax policy.

We have made small steps in the last four years to a better business climate, but we are not the best.  We must compete with states have several advantages over us.  Some things are going to be hard if not impossible to overcome.  This year has been a surprisingly pleasant winter but we often have harsh weather in North Dakota.  We also have a limited workforce and long distances to many markets.  Here in the Northeast we have some of the greatest extremes of these problems and it is evidenced by the 20 percent population loss in the last ten years.

So we must focus on what we do have:

1.     We have a strong work ethic and an educated people

2.     We have industrial facilities  that can or could be repurposed for other uses  (Air Force, Ethanol etc)

3.     We have decent infrastructure, low crime, lots of space, and good schools and we have the ability to invest more.

4.     We have close proximity to Canada

5.     We have scenic beauty that can be further tapped to foster new business

6.     We have the ability to change our tax policy to be the best in the nation

We have to realize that we are competing with states all over the nation.  South Dakota continually out ranks us as a better business climate.  We must be the best in what we can control, because we can’t control the weather and our location.

It will be my priority to make North Dakota top every list that measures tax competitiveness and business friendliness.  We must put all options on the table.  I will bring many ideas to make sure we achieve this in the next session. Time is of the essence and we here in this part of the state can benefit from prosperity in other parts of the state, not by handouts, more government, or failed promises, but by conservative governance and reform.

I am inspired by the young people that are working to build a life here.  There are new shops opening, like the Bistro here in Cavalier.  Entrepreneurial spirits and promise of a better life is what brought our ancestors here and it that same spirit and promise that will make us prosperous again.

Thank you again for coming tonight.  I appreciate your support and let me leave with one piece of advice.  Encourage young people to strike out on their own. Tell them they can only win if they try.  Doing nothing is failure.

Honesty and integrity are hard qualities to find in some politicians; however Joe Miller of District 10 embodies those qualities. Joe Miller stands up for what he believes in and that is a rare thing these days. Through a tumultuous legislative session, Sen. Miller stood his ground and put his reputation on the line to support good legislation, particularly on the life issue.

This week, NDRL‘s Political Action Committee endorsed their first candidate of this election season. Sen. Miller is young, energized, intelligent, articulate, and rooted in ND values, and NDRL PAC couldn’t be more proud to endorse him. NDRL named Sen. Miller their Legislator of the Year 2011.
